PURPOSE:To obtain a display element having a high memory characteristic by using conductive plastic having excellent capacity to hold a color (memory characteristic). CONSTITUTION:An anode 10 which is formed by forming an electrode 12 consisting of a conductive film to a thin film shape on a base film 11 and synthesizing a 5-membered heterocyclic compd. and benzene deriv. on the electrode 12 by an electrolytic oxidation polymn. and a cathode 14 which is formed by forming an electrode 16 facing the electrode 12 of the anode 10 on the base film 15 are superposed by hermetically sealing an org. solvent such as acetonitrile or propylene carbonate contg. an electrolyte between the anode and the cathode. At least one of the base films of the electrodes 10, 14 is constituted of a transparent material. Anions are doped to the conductive plastic 2 and the color changed by the reflected or transmitted light is visible if a DC voltage is impressed to the electrodes 3 stuck with the conductive plastic 2 as the anode and the counter electrode 5 as the cathode. This color change is stable, i.e., the memory characteristic is excellent.
