PURPOSE:To permit paper sheets to be fed securely, by not applying to a separation roller rotating force to feed paper sheets to a direction reverse to a paper sheet feed direction when paper sheet feed starts in an automatic paper sheet feed device for feeding documents laminated in a copying machine or the like one by one. CONSTITUTION:When an output signal 34 from a control circuit 30 changes from a low level to a high level and a timer 32 starts, a drive circuit 24 drives a motor 22 to cause a paper sheet feed roller 10 to rotate in a direction shown by an arrow 38. Then, a separation roller 14 also rotates in a direction of an arrow 40 so that paper sheets 18 are fed in a direction of an arrow 42. When an output signal 36 changes from a low level to a high level after a period of time during which a plurality of paper sheets can stay between rollers 10, 14 has passed, the control circuit 30 causes a drive circuit 28 to start operation so that a transmission roller 12 rotates in a direction of an arrow 44 and the roller 12 rotates in a direction of an arrow 46. Therefore, the paper sheets 18 except the one at the lowermost layer are fed to the side of a document table 16. On the other band, a torque limiter is energized to feed the lowermost paper sheet on a paper sheet guide plate 20.
