PURPOSE:To obtain an easily useable character input device which requires no special preparation, by outputting continuously a retreat code and a selected character code, when a user selects a correct candidate after having outputted only a character code of the first candidate. CONSTITUTION:When a user writes a character, a two-dimensional coordinate data is inputted in detail by a coordinate input means 10 in accordance with a motion of his hand, and a decision of its write end is executed. In other case than the write end, its coordinate data is sent to a character recognizing means 11, and the input of the coordinate data is repeated. In case of the write end, the means 11 executes the recognition, based on the inputted coordinate data. A result of recognition becomes a candidate character code group, but only a first candidate in said group is sent to a code output means 13 and its code is outputted. The user decides whether a candidate has been selected or not by using a character selecting means 12, and thereafter, if it is not selected, the device is prepared for the next character input. Also, when said selection has been executed, first of all, a retreat code is outputted through the means 13, and subsequently, a character code of the selected candidate is outputted in the same way, and thereafter, the device is prepared for the next character input.
