PURPOSE:To make a display surface bright without increasing power consumption by providing a reflecting plate nearby the lower end of a display element. CONSTITUTION:The reflecting plate 11 which reflects external light incident from right above to light the display surface of a display element 12 is provided at or nearby the lower end part of the display element 12. The display element 12 is the reflection type photodetecting display element such as a liquid crystal panel, an ECD panel, a transmissive ferroelectric body, a magnetic particle display element, an electrostatic particle display element, and an EPID, and the display element is lighted preferably by a glass-made mirror wherein mercury is charged, metallic thin plate, or reflecting plate formed by coating a plastic plate with a silver surface. Consequently, a bright display is seen even when an observer sees the display surface horizontally.
