PURPOSE:To increase the operation efficiency by detecting the total pump head which acts onto the main machine of a pump water wheel connected into a brached pipe and the effective head and using the both head values as the signals for controlling a guide vane. CONSTITUTION:Pump water wheels 4a and 4b are connected with branched pipes 3a and 3b. Pressure detecting devices 8a and 8b are installed into the branched pipes 3a and 3b in the vicinity of the casing, and pressure detecting devices 9a and 9b are installed into a draft tube part. When the pump water wheel 4a performs pumping up operation, and the pump water wheel 4b performs water wheel operation, the total pump head and the effective head are calculated from the signals supplied from the detecting means 8a, 8b, 9a, and 9b, and a guide vane is controlled. Therefore, a main machine operated in each operation mode can be controlled under the proper opening degree state of a guide vane.
