PURPOSE:To detect the winding diameter of a smaller cassette without changing a means which detects the winding diameter of a standard tape cassette, by setting a moderating ratio of rotation transmission from the second reel base to the third reel base to a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:In case of winding of a smaller tape cassette with the first reel base 17 as the take-up side, the ratio of rotation transmission from the second reel base 16 to the third reel base 18 is so set that the rotation number of the second reel base 16 at the time, when the remainder of the tape wound around a reel with which the third reel base 18 is engaged is a prescribed value, is equal to that of the second reel base 16 at the time when the remainder of the tape wound around a reel with which the second reel base 16 engaged is the same value in case of winding of a standard tape cassette 36 with the first reel base as the take-up side. Consequently, the rotation number of the second reel base is fixed when the magnetic tape remainder of the standard tape cassette as well as the smaller tape cassette is the same value. This rotation number is detected to use the winding diameter detecting means for the standard size cassette even in case of setting of the smaller cassette.
