PURPOSE:To easily and accurately discriminate an area by constituting such servo pattern that a signal which discriminates the area of a cylinder is equal to the signal of an area on the outside or the inside of a boundary. CONSTITUTION:Magnetic information which controls an actuator is recorded on one magnetic disk as the servo pattern where the cylinder is divided into a data area, a shipping area, etc., and the signal which discriminates the area is certainly equal to the signal of the area on the inside or the outside of the boundary in case of boundaries of respective areas. Cylinder areas A and C and a boundary area B are distinguished with sink bits I, II, III, and IV, and sink bits are divided to pattern '1' and pattern '0'. Thus, cylinder areas as boundaries do not exist, and the circuit and the method for discriminating cylinders are simplified and they are accurately discriminated.
