PURPOSE:To record and reproduce multimode pictures of high quality with a small number of rotary transformers by connecting multiazimuth magnetic heads selected in accordance with modes to rotary transformers through a switching circuit provided on a rotary drum. CONSTITUTION:Pictures are recorded and reproduced on a magnetic tape, which is wound at an angle slightly wider than 270 deg. around the rotary drum whose diameter is 2/3 times as long as the diameter of a standard type drum, by multiazimuth magnetic heads DA1-DA4 which are formed with heads E1-E4 for standard mode different in azimuth angle and heads S1-S4 for long-time recording and are arranged at intervals of 90 deg.. These heads E1-E4 and S1-S4 are selectively connected to corresponding rotary transformers RT1-RT4 through transistors Q1 and Q2 whose turning-on/off is controlled in accordance with control signals supplied to terminals T1-T3 of the switching circuit provided on the rotary drum. Thus, multimode pictures of high quality are recorded and reproduced with a small number of shared rotary transformers.
