PURPOSE:To well perform a picture processing both for a contrasty image, and a soft image, by switching the first mode which converts a digital picture to a bit of analog picture information, and makes coincide the signal level width of black and white with the amplitude of a reference signal having a prescribed frequency, and the second mode which makes the former narrower than the latter. CONSTITUTION:At the time of performing print by every color in order, one of color component signals is selected 2, and is D/A-converted 3, then being inputted 15 to a comparator 4. Meanwhile, one time input of a chopping wave signal 5 is performed 16 to every prescribed picture element of a bit of digital information outputted 1. A timepiece signal 19 is synchronized with a horizontal synchronizing signal 17, and a picture element timepiece 9, and a video timepiece 10 are issued by performing sutraction in every 1/4 cycle, and the transfer of a digital signal, and the latch of a D/A conversion are performed by the timepiece 9. The pattern of a picture signal 15 is compared with the level of a pattern signal 16, thereby, a bit of binary-coded picture information 18 on which pulse width modulation is applied, can be obtained. A picture mode is selected 20, and the level of the signal 15 is adjusted so that, at the time of reproducing a solid color, the white level 30 of the picture signal 15 is set at the apex of the pattern signal 16, and the black level 31 is set almost at the bottom, and at the time of reproducing a halftone, the white level 33 is set lower than the apex of the pattern signal, and the black level is set higher than the apex.
