The structural element on which the machine is based is formed by a monobloc beam 40 of constant cross-section which extends in a first direction Y with a first portion 41 which, by virtue of its own rigidity, supports and guides the carriage 12 carrying the writing head 11 along the full length of its movement in the first direction Y, and with a second portion 45 which defines bearing surfaces 46, 47 that support the drum 20 for driving the printing stock in a second direction X perpendicular to the first direction Y. The carriage 12 is guided by rails 43, 44 formed by the beam 40 or fixed to it, and a recess 50 is formed in the constant-cross-section beam 40 along the full length over which the writing head acts to permit the printing stock to pass and to permit it to engage with the driving member 20. <IMAGE>
