Preheater-mixer device making it possible to preheat a flow of cold gas 1 by direct contact and to mix this flow of cold gas 1 with a flow of hot gas 2, comprising a duct 6 supplying hot gas 2 which is arranged perpendicularly to the flow of cold gas 1, the hot gas 2 entering at one end 7 of the duct 6, the other end 8 of which is closed, and leaving the duct 6 perpendicularly to its direction of entry through at least one longitudinal slit 9 parallel to an edge of this duct 6, so as to be mixed with the cold gas 1 in a mixing zone 10, characterised in that it comprises means 12 for adjusting the rate of the flow of hot gas 2 leaving the duct 6, making it possible for the duct 6 of given and fixed cross-section to be adapted to the rate of the flow of cold gas 1 as a function of the temperatures of the gases 1, 2 and of that desired at the outlet for the mixture.
