Processes for desulphurising heavy petroleum residues, consisting in heating the heavy petroluem residues to a temperature of 190 to 200 DEG C. An electric current at a voltage of 4 to 20 V is passed through the heated heavy petroleum residues and Fe2O3 and/or Pb3O4 and Ba(OH)2 are added, the mass ratio of these products being from 1 to 10/1 to 20 respectively. Application especially to the treatment of tars and bitumens.
