PURPOSE:To increase performance of a battery by making current flow across terminals so that the potential of a negative electrode in the final stage of formation in a lead-acid battery is less than the equilibrium potential of cadmium in electrolyte to conduct container-foramtion. CONSTITUTION:Container-formation of a lead-acid battery is conducted by making large current flow so that the potential of a negative electrode in the final stage of formation is less than 0.40V vs Cd/Cd<2+> which is equilibrium potential of cadmium in electrolyte. Decrease in oxidation current caused by reduction of Sb and separation of deposited Sb by hydrogen evolution is prevented. Decrease in hydrogen overvoltage caused by deposition of Sb dissolved from a positive grid on a negative plate is also prevented. Therefore, the performance of the battery is substantially increased without remarkable cahnge in the method of container-formation. |
