The invention relates to a gripping head of a plate stretcher for stretching and straightening rolled or pressed flat stretching stock, in particular sheets and plates. The gripping head consists of a multiplicity of plates distributed over the working width of the gripping head and situated adjacent to one another perpendicularly to the plane of the stretching stock, and of flanges or crossmembers extending over the entire width of the gripping head on the side of the plates remote from the working region and connecting the plates to one another. In order to reduce the stress in the mouth of the plates caused by the expanding forces while making full use of the power of the plate stretcher in the case of relatively narrow stretching stock and in order to reduce the structural dimensions and the weight of the gripping head, it is proposed that all the plates (3) be connected to one another non-positively, via respective cross ties (9, 10) provided above and below the stretching plane, at their outer narrow sides (15, 16) extending in the region transverse to the action of the expanding force. <IMAGE>
