A description is given of a ratchet mechanism with a pawl drive (1), a drivable ratchet wheel (6) rotatable in one direction, a pawl (3) which engages in the ratchet wheel and can be actuated by the pawl drive, and a pawl spring (2) acting on the pawl. To drive the ratchet wheel, the pawl can be pivoted in one direction about an axis (4) by the pawl drive and, for its return, can be pivoted about the axis in the opposite direction under the action of the pawl spring. The pawl is furthermore mounted in a manner which allows it to be displaced on the axis (4) under the action of the ratchet wheel, approximately in the radial direction of the latter. To carry out an operating step, the pawl drives the ratchet wheel via a drive projection (9) and the ratchet wheel tooth lying in front of it and, for the return of the pawl, the said pawl slides on the tooth until it is released by the latter and falls onto the next tooth. In the process, the drive projection fits around this tooth so that, when the pawl is pivoted once more by the pawl drive, the next operating step is carried out. <IMAGE>
