In order to improve the climbing and sliding properties of a cross-country ski, it is proposed that it be provided with a runner 5 which, during the sliding phase, is completely located in a recess in the ski, while in the push-off phase it is moved by a spring arrangement 4 sufficiently far out of the recess for its underside to lie below the running surface of the ski 1 (see Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
