The relief valve, which can be used, in particular, in conjunction with a positive displacement pump, consists of a housing with a first flow path and a second flow path for a medium flowing through the valve, the flow paths being separated by a valve element situated in an initial position which is pressed towards its valve seat by a spring force. To allow the flow medium to flow through the valve in two opposite directions, it is possible to cause to act on the valve element an auxiliary force opposite to the spring force and produced by means of the pressure from the second flow path such that the valve element is moved out of the closed position and a direct connection between the second and the first flow path is established.
