A fitting device (populating device) is described having a program-controlled positioning system for a gripper, which holds the component to be fitted and inserts it into a printed circuit board. The fitting device according to the invention is distinguished by the fact that a fine positioning module is provided between the positioning system and the gripper, which fine positioning module can rotate the gripper about an axis which is at right angles to the gripper plane and can displace it in the gripper plane. Furthermore, a sensor detects position differences between the component to be fitted and the printed circuit board, and a control unit applies control signals to the fine positioning module in accordance with the output signals from the sensor, by means of which control signals the gripper is displaced and/or rotated relative to the positioning system. In consequence it is possible to compensate for positioning errors quickly and without any intervention in the sequence program of the fitting process.
