A heat exchanger for liquid and/or gaseous media exhibits a tube jacket through which a first medium flows, in which jacket a plate package is arranged through which a second medium flows and via whose single plate wall heat can be transferred from one medium to the other. Deflection plates for directing the first medium in several transverse flow from the outside through flow gaps of the plate package are provided in the jacket space of the jacket tube. Individual plates with closed flow openings are arranged staggered with respect to each other in order to direct the second medium in several transverse flows through flow gaps inside the plate package. By means of different arrangements of the deflection plates or the closed flow openings it is possible to change the number of the respective flow gaps and thus match it to the amounts flowing through.
