L(-)-Carnitine is synthesized stereoselectively by contacting an unsatd. cpd. (II), chosen from crotonoy betaine, its nitrile, salts, esters and amides, with a microorganism of the genera Escherichia, Salmonella, Shigella, Citrobacter, Clostridium, Hafnia or Proteus. Thus, E. coli 044 K74 is cultured in a complex medium contg. (II), contrifuged, and suspended in a pH 7.5 buffered aq. soln. contg. 34.9mM (II). The mixt. is incubated at 37≦̸C for 24hr to produce 9.08mM L-carnitinec 26% yield based on (II) substrate. L-Carnitine is useful for therapeutic purposes. |
