The invention concerns a procedure and arrangement for processing rastered, digitised images in evaluation devices. It can preferably be used to process images in robotics, in visual monitoring of industrial processes and inspection, in automatic image analysis for pre-processing (restoration, making thinner, making thicker) raster images of objects, e.g. to identify written characters. Image processing with a variable image window size is possible at low hardware cost and with simple implementation of the image processing operators. According to the invention, at every k'th step of the procedure, the assignments of the pixels of a (uk+1 . uk+1)-sized image window, where: uk+1 = uk-2, u0 = N, and k = 0 ... (N-3)/2 are modified or checked by evaluation of a (3 . 3) image window around the respective pixel of the (uk+1 . uk+1) image window, depending on the respectively selected image processing operator and the fulfilment of one or more specified logical functions. The raster assignment is modified in every k'th step of the procedure except the last.
