The drive device for the carriage of flat knitting machines, with a continuously rotating chain and with a reversible toothed quadrant which can be brought into engagement alternately with the two strands of the chain, is to be designed, with the aim of increasing the operating reliability, in such a way that the teeth of the toothed quadrant can be introduced without collision into the links of the strands and the mass forces are reduced during the reversal of movement. This object is achieved in that guide rollers are provided on the carriage near to the tip circle of the toothed quadrant in order to increase the engagement angle for each strand, in that the first tooth of the toothed quadrant is arranged so as to be displaceable elastically inwards, and in that a tooth-free segment of an arc of a circle is adjacent to the last tooth and there is fastened to the toothed quadrant a cam plate, the cams of which cooperate in the region of stroke reversal with fixed cam rollers. Between the regions of stroke reversal, the toothed quadrant is secured against rotation by a guide rail fixed relative to the frame, guide bearings being supported on one side on this rail. <IMAGE>
