The controller includes sensors for knocking (30), crank angle (40), load (50), and water temperature. The microprocessor (12) receives the sensor signals and generates a timing control signal to a power transistor circuit (64) to a switch on and off the primary current in an ignition coil and generate a high voltage ignition signal. The timing can be retarded or restored for each cylinder of the engine by the microprocessor in response to the detection of a knock in each cylinder. The knock detection level is compensated to allow for aging of the sensor.
