Gas with high H2 content and a viscous liq. are fed by distributors, e.g. bubble caps at the lower end of vertical high pressure continuous reactor column to react while rising through thick bed of fluidised catalyst granules. Above the fluidised zone the rising fluid is sepd. into liq. and gaseous fractions. From the space above the liq. surface, a stream of gas and vapour leaves a discharge pipe. Liq. is returned to the column base for recycling by a pump in the expanded head of a central farller pipe. The bladed pump is driven by a motor above the column, has a pressurised bearing resisting ingress of reactants and is preceded by anti-swirl blades.
