In the case of an electrical gas-blast circuit breaker, a resiliently elastic connecting element (10) which transmits tensile and compression forces is inserted between the drive for the moving switching element (3) on the one side and the displaceable part (4) of a piston/cylinder arrangement (4, 5) for producing an extinguishing gas flow, on the other side. In consequence, the drive can be dimensioned for relatively low drive powers irrespective of the magnitude which can be expected for the maximum switching-off current and the internal pressure resulting from this. The resiliently elastic connecting element (10) represents an energy store which is charged by the drive and is discharged via the displaceable part (4) of the piston/cylinder system (4, 5) when the internal pressure, which acts against said part and is dependent on the burning arc, has become correspondingly lower. <IMAGE>
