PURPOSE:To enable a roughness to be accurately measured by a simple measuring method by projecting laser light onto a metal surface, receiving reflected light, converting its intensity into a voltage and obtaining a mean voltage. CONSTITUTION:Incident laser light 12 produced in an He-Ne laser oscillator 11 is reflected from the surface of a cold-rolled steel plate 1 located on a movable carriage 17. Reflected light 13 is received by a photodetector 14 using a photomultiplier and the output signals of the photodetector 14 are fed to a signal processor 15. A computer storing a conversion curve between the output voltage of the reflected laser light from the surface of the steel plate and a surface roughness obtained by a 'Profilometer(R)' is built in the processor 15 and the processor 15 converts an output voltage corresponding to the reflected laser light to a surface roughness value to output it to a recorder 16. Thus, the measuring accuracy of the degree equal to that of the 'Profilometer(R)' can be obtained.
