Slow cooling zone for a steel annealing furnace consists of an atmosphere circulation device in a housing, an indirect heating device, a circulation conduit with cooler fitted into it and opening and closing valves to enable the effects of the coller to be used or to be cut off from the housing. When the steel is to be subjected to a quick reduction treatment the valves are closed and the heating device switched on. To switch back to a cooling zone, the heater is switched off and the valves opened. The heater is made up of a number of electric heaters.
