PURPOSE:To obtain a desired lambda-characteristic by selecting patterns and not using all of the multi-valued patterns. CONSTITUTION:In order to make the lambda-characteristic a curve (an ideal lambda-characteristic which is a function of a circle, a parabola, a hyperbola, etc.), gradation levels exceeding those actually used in number are reproduced, from which arbitrary gradation is selected. For the above-mentioned purpose, exposure levels are provided in seven values. In this case, the size of a matrix is 4X4. Accordingly, the number of the reproducible gradations come to 4X4X7+1 (zero level) = 113. However, not all of these levels are used, but 64 are used to obtain the targeted lambda-characteristic.
