In a torsional vibration damper, in particular for a clutch disc of a motor vehicle, a first rotary unit has a first friction surface and a second rotary unit has a second friction-surface carrier with a second friction surface. The second friction-surface carrier is mounted movably on the second rotary unit and guided by guide means which allow it a guide play relative to the second rotary unit which deviates from the peripheral direction around the axis of rotation. In the case of frictional vibrations, the second friction-surface carrier performs a movement relative to the second rotary unit. The characteristic of the resultant friction torque between the two rotary units can be varied by the choice of guide means.
