The invention relates to a sensor for measuring wavelengths or angles of rotation, having a finely divided linear or angular scale, and having a probe which can be moved along the scale and responds to the graduation of the scale. In order to be able to produce such a linear or angular scale in a simple and cost-effective way, it is provided that the scale consists of a stiff base and a layer arranged thereupon, which serves as recording carrier for markings which form the graduation of the scale and can be scanned magnetically or optically, and that the probe delivers evaluatable signals corresponding to the scanned markings.
