PURPOSE:To attain the efficient recording of a picture by extracting the rough data of a picture represented by a video signal prior to the recording of the picture so as to calculate the characteristic value thereby storing the value. CONSTITUTION:In receiving a printing instruction from an operation section 62, a control section 46 reads a video signal sequentially from a track designated by an input information, a characteristic value is operated by a sample data and stored once in a storage section 47. At the end of the processing above, the control section 46 starts the read of a video signal from a first track, and in such case the section 46 reads the picture data of the track from the storage section 47 to apply automatic setup operation. Then one frame video signal is read from a video floppy to apply picture processing according to the picture processing parameter. Thus, the proper picture recording with lots of frames is applied efficiently without requiring much expenrience and man-hour.
