PURPOSE:To improve the magnetic characteristics in a vertical direction by impressing an AC oscillating magnetic field in the intra-surface direction of a recording medium and subjecting the medium to an orientation treatment, thereby obtaining the perpendicularly magnetized recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The AC oscillating magnetic field is impressed to the intra- surface direction of the medium and the medium is subjected to the orientation treatment to obtain the perpendicularly magnetized recording medium. gamma-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, the iron oxide in the intermediate oxidation state of the gamma-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, Co-contg. gamma-Fe2O3, the iron oxide of the intermediate oxidation state of the Co-contg. gamma-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, CrO2, the oxide formed by incorporating >=1 kinds of metals into the CrO2, metals such a Fe, Co and Ni, alloys such as Fe-Co, Fe-Ni, Fe-Co-Ni, Fe-Co-B, Fe-Co-Cr-B, Mn-Bi, Mn-Al, and Fe-Co-V and iron nitride are used as the magnetic particles to be coated on a nonmagnetic substrate such as tape and sheet. The recording medium having the excellent magnetic characteristics in the vertical direction is thus obtd.
