PURPOSE:To obtain the titled novel ion-exchange membrane having high electrical current efficiency, low membrane resistance, high mechanical strength and safety and useful for the electrolysis of an alkali metal chloride, etc., by combining a porous substrate composed of flat porous fibers and a specific ion- exchanging material layer. CONSTITUTION:The objective exchange membrane has total thickness of 35-500mum and is composed of (A) a porous substrate composed of flat porous fibers having a pore diameter of 0.05-30mum, porosity of 30-95%, thickness of 15-200mum and width/thickness ratio of 2-300 and having a gas-releasing layer at the surface and hydrophilic property at the inner side of the pore and (B) an ion exchange material layer integrated to at least one surface of the substrate. The component A is preferably a slit yarn produced by slitting porous drawn polytetrafluoroethylene sheet having a Gurley number of 1-500 and having fine structure characterized by knots bonded with each other through fine fibers. |
