A one-piece profiled beam (40) extends in the Y direction with a portion (41) rigid enough to support and guide the carriage (12) with the writing head (11) throughout the length of travel. The paper is driven in the X direction by a drum (20) rotating in two bearings (46,47). The carriage is guided along two rails (43,44) formed on the beam, in which a cutout (50) allows the paper to pass between the drum and the carriage support. The carriage and drum are driven respectively by a linear and rotary motor.
