PURPOSE:To improve coercive force and squareness ratio and to provide higher output and lower noise by providing a magnetic material consisting of an alloy of cobalt, phosphorus and thallium on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic material consisting of the alloy of cobalt, phosphorus and thallium is provided on the substrate. An underlying layer may be provided on the substrate surface. The underlying layer is formed of a nonmagnetic nickel/phosphorus layer formed by electroless plating and is formed by subjecting the substrate or the underlying layer to mirror polishing, then to a texturing treatment (to form fine and uniform concentrical grooves on the surface) at need, then forming the magnetic layer by an electroless plating method, etc. Cobalt ions are sulfate, nitrate halogen compd., acetate, etc. and the concn. thereof is usually in a 0.001-0.5mol/l, more preferably 0.01-0.06mol/l range. The magnetic recording medium having a high S* value and having the high output and low noise is thus obtd.
