Fuel for use in steam generators, is obtd. by (a) selecting stalks of thistles of cynara cardunculus or cynara 507 variety from which the seeds and leaves, used for making oil and producing animal feed, have been removed; (b) crumbling the stalks into splinters, chips or granules, to give a raw material with 17% moisture and calorific value below 4318 kcal/kg; and (c) agglomerating the material into briquettes, pellets or tablets by compression with a synthetic or artificial resin in a press.
