PURPOSE:To reduce the weight and enhance the wear resistance of a valve lifter, by forming the sliding surface of a cam at the tip of the valve lifter by means of ceramic material and forming a guide part situated at the side, peripheral part of the lifter by means of aluminium, Al-alloy, or compound material together with joining the both into one body. CONSTITUTION:A cam 1 opens or closes a valve 2 via a valve lifter 5, which consists of a sliding surface 7 on which the cam 1 slides, and a guide part 8, which slides on the inner peripheral surface of the hole of a cylinder head 15. The sliding surface 7 is formed with ceramic material, while the guide part 8 is formed with aluminium, Al-alloy, or the compound material. Both sliding surface 7 and guide part 8 are joined through Al-brazing in order to constitute the valve lifter 5.
