PURPOSE:To restrain initial combustion and to enable to promote diffuse combustion at the latter stage of combustion by forming an air chamber, which is communicated with a cavity, inside a projection provided at the bottom wall of the cavity. CONSTITUTION:When a piston 6 is elevated in a compressing stroke and the internal pressure of a cavity is increased, a part of the air inside the cavity 7 is pushed into an air chamber 9 formed inside the hollow part of the projection 8. As a result of that, the inside of a combustion chamber becomes a little short of air at initial combustion, therefore excessive initial combustion is restrained for that quantity. And in a process where the piston 6 lowers from the upper dead point, the air stored in the air chamber 9 is ejected into the cavity 7 through a communication passage 8b. Hereby the air is sufficiently supplied, in the latter stage of combustion, to the combustion gas existing around the air chamber 9 and in its upper part and the combustion gas is effectively agitated agitated and as a result of that, the complete combustion is realized and diffuse combustion is promoted.
