The object of the invention is to develop a process for recycling the majority of the heat dissipated with the exhaust gas into the melting furnace in an adjustable manner together with the batch stream, with minimisation of conventional process steps and technologically necessary equipment outside the tank furnace. The process should be matched to the running time of the melting furnace. According to the invention, a batch stream formed of raw materials and preferably with admixed cullet of defined size is thermally pretreated by indirect heat transfer during the buffer time between the batch charging of a container in the immediate vicinity of the melting furnace and the regulated quasi-continuous removal. The process for thermal pretreatment of the batch material in melting furnaces is intended for use in the glass industry.
