PURPOSE:To produce an impermeable carbon material having superior heat and chemical resistances, dimensional stability and strength by combining a specified thermosetting composition with a carbonaceous or graphitic skeleton material treated with an aromatic cross-linking agent and by molding the resulting composite body by heat curing. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a carbonaceous or graphitic skeleton material having hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or other functional groups on the surface is treated with an aromatic cross-linking agent having one or more aromatic rings each having two or more hydroxymethyl or halomethyl groups. A mixture of a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound having oxygen, sulfur, halogen or the like in the molecule having two or more rings with said aromatic cross-linking agent and an acid catalyst is prepd. or the mixture is brought into a reaction by heating to prepare a thermosetting intermediate reaction product. The treated skeleton material is combined with the thermosetting composition and the resulting composite body is plasticized at 100-400 deg.C in an oxidizing or nonoxidizing atmosphere and molded by heat curing. Thus, the skeleton materials and the thermosetting composition are bonded to each other with the aromatic cross-linking agent in-between and an impermeable carbon material suitable for various machine parts is obtd. |
