PURPOSE:To recover heavy metals, rare earth elements etc., efficiently, by dissolving said metals or elements in a highly alkaline aqueous solution, adding cyclodextrin or/and its polymeric compound thereto, and trapping metal ions in the solution. CONSTITUTION:Heavy metals, rare earth metals, etc., (e.g., copper or europium) are dissolved in an aqueous alkaline solution (e.g., aqueous sodium hydroxide solution) of a pH of at least 12. Subsequently cyclodextrin or/and its polymeric compound is added to said solution, and the metal ions in said solution are trapped thereby and recovered. The cyclodextrin polymeric compounds can be obtained by, e.g., crosslinking cyclodextrin with epichlorohydrin.
