PURPOSE:To reduce the load of an operator and also to improve the reliability of an optical disk memory by providing a means for checking the state of deterioration of a disk medium and saving data in another memory area based on the checked result of said checking means. CONSTITUTION:A single track contains (r+1) pieces of sectors and each of these sectors includes an identification data part consisting of the identification data such as sector and track numbers, the synchronizing signal needed for the binarization of the read signal, etc., and a user data part consisting of the actual data (user data), the error detecting/correcting data added to the user data, etc. Then the number of blocks where errors are detected are monitored and the deterioration is detected when the number of defective blocks exceeds a fixed level for each sector. Thus the deteriorated sectors are automatically shifted to a replacement area.
