PURPOSE:To stabilize the change in conveying direction of sheets of paper which are intermittently fed at a high speed by stably guiding said sheets of paper which are conveyed at a high speed in a conveying direction changing part and, after bringing said sheets of paper into contact with a stopping means and controlling the posture, interposingly holding and conveying said sheets of paper in a defined direction. CONSTITUTION:A bill B which is fed by a conveying means 32A is guided into a conveying direction changing device 50C by means of a guide 38 and, after being stopped by a stopping means 52, it is conveyed to a conveying means 32B in the perpendicular direction by means of a set of rubber roller 40 and a metal roller 41. That is, before the bill B which was conveyed by the conveying means 32A passes through a detecting means 51C, the rubber roller 40 was held in the position of the rubber roller 40; but, when a defined time elapsed after the bill B passed through the detecting means 51C, a rotary solenoid 48 and a motor 46 are controlled and the rubber roller 40 is brought into pressure contact with the metal roller 41 and rotated, to convey the bill B to the conveying means 32B. Thus, the change in direction of sheets of paper which are intermittently conveyed at a high speed can be carried out securely and stably.
