PURPOSE:To restrain the discharge of a storage battery and increase the life of said battery by varying an automatic gear change pattern and increasing engine speed when the over-discharge condition of said storage battery is detected. CONSTITUTION:During the operation of an engine, the output signals of engine speed 11, vehicle speed 12, throttle opening 13, a shift position 14, and a storage battery discharge condition 16 which are outputted from a detecting part 10 are inputted into a CPU 20 in an electronic control device 9, to judge whether the storage battery is in an over-discharge condition or not. When judged yes, the data of a gear change pattern for over-discharge in which engine speed is set higher than normally is inputted from a ROM 19 and, then, it is judged whether to carry out a gear change or not. And, when judged yes, a result operated based on the gear change pattern is outputted as the operating quantity of a shift solenoid 22 or a lock-up solenoid 23, to carry out a prescribed gear change.
