PURPOSE:To obtain a tape type magnetic recording medium which excels in both running performance and durability, by setting the ratio of the film thickness of a magnetic layer to the total thickness of the magnetic recording medium at <=0.20, using a metallic magnetic powder having the BET value higher than a specific level to form a magnetic body, and specifying the specific surface resistance of the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The ratio X/Y is set at <=0.20 and preferably at <=0.15 between the film thickness X of a magnetic layer and the total thickness Y of a tape type magnetic recording medium. As a result, the thickness of a supporter 1 is generally increased and the rigidity of the supporter is improved. Thus, the edge damage is reduced together with excellent driving stability. While the BET value of the metallic magnetic powder is set >=50m<2>/g and the surface specific resistance of the magnetic layer is reduced down to <=5X10<9>OMEGA/sq. There fore, the generation of static electricity is reduced with a tape and the adsorp tion of dust is also reduced. Then the drop-out factor is reduced and the driving stability of the tape is improved because the generation of static electricity is reduced in a tape rubbing mode.
