PURPOSE:To produce a single crystal having the same chemical composition as natural spinel by using an Al2O3-MgO-NiO mixture as starting material and adopting a light convering floating zone method. CONSTITUTION:A powdery Al2O3-MgO-NiO mixture similar in composition to green spinel is used as starting material. The mixture is filled into a rubber tube or the like, freed of air, molded and sintered. A single crystal is then produced from the sintered body by a light converging floating zone method. The preferred molar ratio of Al2O3:MgO in the starting material is 1:(0.90-0.98) and the preferred concn. of NiO as a colorant is 0.02-0.10mole. By this method, a green spinel single crystal is obtd.
