PURPOSE:To attain correct original detection while widening the allowable scope of the fitting accuracy of a sensor by shifting an optical system prior to copying, reading a white paper mounted on an original platen with a CCD, and detecting an origin. CONSTITUTION:The white paper of an A4 version is matched and placed to an original mounting reference position, and at the time of the automatic adjusting mode of a CCD, an optical system advance from a home position up to the position of A4 width+100mm and returns to the home position. At such a time, the coordinates of an X axis and a Y axis are corrected. Next, after the system advances up to the central part of a white paper 5 and is made stationary, a lamp is dimmed and shading data (correcting data) are determined. The system returns to the home position and automatic adjustment is executed. Thus, when a service man sets once, it is non necessary to execute the adjustment until a substrate is replaced.
