PURPOSE:To make it possible to determine a corresponding line of a character string area in the direction of arbitrary angle at high speed by detecting a corresponding line candidate for individual character string using information of feature quantity possessing lines registered in each block and shifting rotationally character string areas, character areas etc. CONSTITUTION:A corresponding line candidate detecting section 2 detects feature quantity possessing lines L1-L4 included in adjoining blocks B1-B4 as corresponding line candidates of a character string area A1 using information of feature quantity possessing lines registered in each block. A corresponding line candidate position verifying section 3 makes positional verification whether corresponding line candidates L1-L4 are included or not in an area made by extending each side constituting the character string area A1 in horizontal and vertical directions, and thereby, excludes a feature quantity possessing line L4 which is not included in the extended area and narrows down corresponding line candidates to L1-L3. A rotational shifting section 4 rotates and shifts each corresponding line candidate itself, and the character string area A1 and four apices of rectangle of character areas (a)-(d) around an end of respective corresponding line candidate until the corresponding line candidate goes to horizontal.
