PURPOSE:To improve sensitivity of the titled clinometer by constituting a plumb so that the center of gravity of the plumb is positioned higher in the vertical direction than a plumb fixing part of an elastic round bar and the relative tilt angle increases relative to the tilt angle of an apparatus with respect to a horizontal plane. CONSTITUTION:When the tilt angle of the apparatus which is an object to be detected with respect to the horizontal plane and the tilt angle of a rigid member 4 in the vertical direction are denoted as theta and phi respectively, the relative tilt angle of the rigid member 4 with respect to the object to be detected which is detected by a detection optical system 7 is made to phi-theta and the sensitivity of a bidirectional clinometer is indicated by (phi, -theta)/theta. In this case, since phi-theta=(a)lomegaphi/EItheta={1-[(a)lomega]/EI]}phi is formulated, (phi-theta)/theta is made equal to (a)lomega/[EI-(a)lomega]. Then, the sensitivity (phi-theta)/theta can be made larger than 1 by selecting each parameter so that 2alomega is made larger than EI.
