A dentifrice composition comprises a water-soluble inorganic or ionisable organic fluoride which may be present from 0.01 to 2% by weight of the composition, calculated as fluoride ions, and a polishing agent, which may be present from 20 to 99.5% by weight of the composition, which is a mixture of a water-insoluble polymetaphosphate and a calcium or magnesium carbonate or ortho-, pyro- or metaphosphate, the polymetaphosphate being present in an amount at least equal to that of the calcium or magnesium carbonate or phosphate. Fluorides specified are stannous, sodium, potassium, ammonium, lithium, germanium and aluminium fluorides. Suitable polymetaphosphates are sodium and potassium polymetaphosphates, Maddrell's and Kurrol's salts. Other polishing agents which may be present are bentonite, kaolin, ground bone-meal, calcium sulphate, alumina gel, pumice, silica, whiting, tin oxide, hydrated magnesia, magnesia, magnesium trisilicate, and talc. The composition which may take the form of a paste may have a pH between 5.7 and 7.5, or a powder, may contain surface-active agents, e.g. soap, sodium lauryl sulphate, p oxygen yielding compounds, e.g. perborates, buffers, colouring, flavouring and sweetening agents, e.g. saccharin, and glycerol, sorbitol, gum tragacanth, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, India moss, starch and colloidal clays. |
